Who's Gonna Pick My Cotton
When it comes to American politics, one thing will always remain and that is Democrats never letting go of Jim Crow beliefs.
Before the Civil War, when the topic of slavery would arise, Southern Democrats would often proffer, “Who will pick our cotton?” If slavery was ended. This was still a position adopted by Southern Democrats after the war resulting in the creation of harsh sharecropping laws as a consequence of Jim Crow policies.
The history of the Jim Crow era and its connection to the Democratic Party reflects the political, racial, and social dynamics of the United States from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. Jim Crow laws were state and local statutes enacted primarily in the Southern United States after Reconstruction (1865–1877). These laws enforced racial segregation in public and private spaces, disenfranchised Black citizens, and institutionalized economic, educational, and social disadvantages for African Americans.
These laws emerged in the late 19th century, following the withdrawal of federal troops from the South after the Compromise of 1877, which marked the end of Reconstruction.
Democrats were staunch advocates of segregation and white supremacy. They sought to maintain the social order that had existed under slavery, now codified under Jim Crow laws. This included but was not limited to the disenfranchisement of Black voters through poll taxes, literacy tests, and grandfather clauses, opposition to civil rights legislation and federal interventions in racial matters, and Passage of laws enforcing segregation in schools, transportation, public spaces, and employment.
It appears these views and perspectives remain the focal point of their political idealogy as projected towards criminal illegal aliens. Take Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY). He made his party’s position clear while addressing the Immigration subcommittee earlier this year when he openly opined:
“We need immigrants in this country, Forget the fact that the farm that our vegetables would rot in the ground if they weren’t being picked by many immigrants — many illegal immigrants — the fact is that the birthrate in this country is way below replacement level, which means our population is going to start shrinking. And the ratio of people on Social Security and Medicare is going to increase relative to the number of people supporting them.”
The commentary on vegetable picking grabbed the most attention online, which resulted in many responses. Sounds like pre-civil war talk to me: ‘Who would pick our cotton?’
Then there are the recent statements made by Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who wouldn’t say if he’d block the imminent deportation of illegal migrants but spewed about the “evilness” of President-elect Donald Trump’s plan.
Johnson recently criticized President-elect Donald Trump's immigration plans, reaffirming Chicago’s status as a sanctuary city. Johnson condemned Trump’s proposal for mass deportations as “unconscionable and dangerous,” asserting that Chicago will not allow its police force to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement, as mandated by city ordinances. He expressed a commitment to protecting all Chicago residents, including undocumented immigrants, from federal actions that he described as oppressive and harmful to communities
Sheltering migrants has drawn ire from residents after it has reportedly cost the city $574.5 million since August 2022. At a previous city council meeting on December 3rd, residents objected to an approximately $60 million property tax increase that was proposed to help officials overcome a $1 billion budget shortfall by the end of the year.
I do not comprehend how going after criminals is a threat to our democracy. - what lunatics! Why don't these politicians fight this hard for our homeless Americans? The moment they walked over the border they committed a crime. Why are these mayors and governors allowed to facilitate human trafficking?
I don’t understand how someone sits here and says most illegal immigrants obey the law. When factually every single one of them has broken it on day 1.
I can not believe this needs to be said yet again. Anyone who is in the country “illegally” IS, IN FACT, A CRIMINAL! It does not matter if they have or have not committed a crime since arriving. The fact that they have entered “illegally” is what makes them a criminal. I do not understand why this is such a hard concept for people to understand.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA): Pelosi remarked:
"We have a shortage of workers in our country... some of the farmers and the growers [are] saying, 'Why are you shipping these immigrants up North? We need them to pick the crops down here."
Modern Democrats are no different than pre-civil War Democrats who argued that enslaved labor was essential to maintaining the Southern economy, particularly the lucrative cotton industry. They claimed that without enslaved labor, the production of cotton on a massive scale would not be possible, which would cripple the economy of the South and significantly impact the global textile market.
Figures like John C. Calhoun defended slavery as a "positive good," claiming it benefitted both the Southern economy and enslaved individuals by providing them with "civilization" and "guidance." They argued that the system was more humane than Northern industrial labor, where free workers labored under harsh conditions with little job security.
Many pro-slavery advocates used religion, particularly interpretations of the Bible, to justify slavery. They claimed that slavery had been an accepted institution throughout history and was sanctioned by religious texts. They argued that enslaving Africans was a natural and divinely ordained hierarchy. Proponents claimed that Africans were inherently suited for hard labor in the Southern climate and incapable of managing their own lives.
Although modern Democrats are anti-Christian, they hold the same This paternalistic view depicted enslaved people as childlike and in need of the guidance of their enslavers, ignoring the realities of systemic abuse and oppression.
I guess Democrat policy and locution will never change. They look at non-whites as mere utensils. It would be good if everyone could recommend a Democrat to be a sponsor for an illegal immigrant. Become a sponsor family, then you can't ever get rid of them, because they will have rights, more rights than citizens, then they can keep up the yard, do your laundry, and clean their house the way slaves did - the Democrat dream.

Torrance, watching bits and pieces of the Senate confirmation hearings, I am struck how all the “senior” senators and specifically the Democratic senators are out-of-touch on reality. Questions are gotcha phrased questions or inane inquiries about hypothetical what-ifs. What I have not heard is in-depth serious questions regarding government and policy. Republican Senators placate as the Democrats condemn. As it all relates to your article it is the same BS. No serious honest discussion. I do not believe there has been one Dem that has come forward and succinctly and honestly stated why they opted for open borders…votes? I am hopeful that the cadre of new younger cabinet members can reform our government to what it is suppose to be.
I am 75 years old. as a young boy in upstate NY, in the "summer fruit" growing region, picking fruit paid good money. the pickers were paid according to how many pieces they plucked. I saw the pay checks. A 375 dollar weekly pay check in 1963, 64, was huge money. I worked union construction as a laborer, 2-3 YEARS LATER and I made about half of that amount. It was enough for a grown man to be able to support a wife and children in the middle class. Many of the pickers were black, from the south. local white boys worked those jobs too. the money was good. Food was more affordable then, than it is now. The United States was prosperous. There was money everywhere, and fruit pickers were well paid. Go figure!!
